Architectural Record/CHINA, an impressive compilation of what's being built in China.
China is spending about $375 billion each year on construction, nearly 16 percent of its gross domestic product. In the process, it is using 54.7 percent of the world's production of concrete, 36.1 percent of the world's stell, and 30.4 percent of the world's coal.
If you look through the celebrity architects' renderings you get an amusing (and then irritating) cartoonized portfolio. OMA is overly OMA, Holl is overly Holl, even Jerde is SuperJerde. And all of them seem to be cribbing from past work, to an embarrassing degree. Well, who's got time to design when you're building so damn fast?
