What I meant to say
Rori snagged this off Gizmodo:
NASA Develops Subvocal Speech DetectionBy attaching two button-sized sensors, NASA scientists have recorded and processed the patterns of silent 'subvocal speech,' also known as 'talking to oneself.' When speaking inaudibly, the brain sends signals to the tongue and vocal chords which can be detected, even if no sound is actually produced.
It stands to reason that if you combine this technology with laser microphones, you could point a device at someone's throat and read his or her thoughts. I bet you'd hear mostly two sounds, either "hm" or "ungh."
This reminds me of the time when Rami and I were sitting in a computer cluster at the GSD, next to a woman who was conjugating all her Spanish verbs aloud before typing them. We had to get up and leave the building several times so that we could laugh freely. Attaching one of these subvocal microphones to her would be very entertaining indeed.
