All of you Boston folk should go and see the premiere screenings of Michele Guai's documentary, "Body Snatchers of Bangkok." at the
Boston International Film Festival. This is an amazing and little known topic outside of SE Asia, and Michele's film was made for National Geographic under difficult, high-risk circumstances.
"Body Snatchers of Bangkok" delves into the lives of
three Thai volunteers who respond nightly to the Thai
public's need for paramedical aid in Bangkok by
collecting corpses and injured victims from accidents,
murders and suicides in their pickup trucks. The film
reveals a side of Asia that is rarely understood by
the rest of the world - it is seen through Asian eyes
and told with an Asian perspective. It is a unique
and heartfelt story about volunteer work, what it
means to live your life to the fullest, and what it
means to die in one of the most culturally
controversial and spiritually rich cities of Asia.
The body snatchers eavesdrop on Police radio frequencies, and speed to the accident scene. They then transport the injured to hospital, but also ensure that the victims of fatalities (often murders or traffic accidents) get the proper Buddhist death ritual--which gains credit for the afterlife for both the victim and the rescuer. This film has been nominated for a slew of awards, and will premiere for the public on Sunday, June 27, at 1:00 PM, Bill Bordy Theatre, 216 Tremont St.
