Shing's latest interest is a Japanese character called Gloomy Bear. Like many other Asian pop characters, Gloomy comes in the form of stuffed animals, figurines, and cell phone dongles. But this is a bear with a difference: in addition to being cute as a button, Gloomy is also staggeringly violent--usually depicted mauling, biting, or snapping the necks of children. Apparently, it's all a big comment on the cloying cuteness of mainstream Japanese toys. The
creator's official site gets the point across. Amusing, and somewhat disturbing.
