If you love something...
Just saw an impressive new movie by self-taught director Kim Ki-Duk, with the somewhat unwieldy title "Spring Summer Autumn Winter...and Spring." It's a Buddhist parable about possesiveness, the seasons of life and the cyclical nature of it all. The whole shebang is set on and around a floating pavilion in a rural valley. It's a bit of an obvious overall premise, and it has some unfortunate freeze-frames and flashbacks, but these days it feels nice to experience a slightly quieter form of bombast. It's also nice to see a Korean movie get some foreign play that isn't a costume drama or a frustrating non-linear horror flick. The
official site doesn't do any justice to the breath-taking beauty of the cinematography, but it's worth a look.
