Lunuganga

"Only architect-type people go to Lunuganga," said correctly our hired driver when he realized that he could not convince our little band of architects to see the usual temples, beaches and regular tourist spots in southern Sri Lanka. Rarely visited, Bawa's place is far off the regular track that the driver was not sure of how to get there.

More underpublished architecture: Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) and his architecture-landscape-local tradition fusion.

I couldn't agree more. Interestingly, I was just thinking recently that Bawa was a prime candidate for the "underpublished but brilliant" posts. Shing and I travelled around Sri Lanka last year looking at Bawa's buildings, and we were absolutely blown away. This guy was really one of the best architects of the 20th century, but, being South Asian, has been relegated to the "interesting but third world" category. I'll dig out some of our photos from that trip and post them.

The timing is also relevant, because we've been asked to design a club house and rec facility in a landscape by Laki Senanayake, a long-time collaborator and friend of Bawa's. We've been asked to build in the Sri Lankan modern style, and we're currently trying to figure out what that means for us. At any rate, I'll see if I can find those pics (Candelama Hotel in particular), and I'll put them up...
