A brilliant new album from Stephin Merrit and The Magnetic Fields is out on Nonesuch Records. Entitled "i", it features shockingly good songs such as "I Wish I Had An Evil Twin," and the suicidal-clown ballad "I Looked All Over Town." Merrit is also involved in a number of side bands, including the Future Bible Heroes and The Gothic Archies. If the Beautiful South and Belle & Sebastian were as clever as they think they are, they'd sound like this. official site

I've been trying to collect all of Stephen Merritt's work for years now. It's impossible. Just when you think you've got the discography of The Magnetic Fields, he goes and creates a new band. There's the Wasps, the 6ths, and so on. Busy dude, that Stephen. Check out 69 Love Songs, vol's 1-3 and The Charm of the Highway Strip.

I haven't heard all of the 69 Love Songs. "No One Will Ever Love You" has been on heavy, heavy mp3 rotation for months now, tho... This guy really knows how to write those wonderful, self-pitying/self-mocking lyrics that send you back to high school. I don't know if this is a good thing, but I'm really enjoying it.
