Reactions to Carfreedom
Currently car-free, I have to say it's nice not having to think, "Where did I park my car?" or "How much is gas these days?" or "To what city have the thieves taken my car this time?" So, I understand the newish French tradition of "car-free day," when they close down all the city's roads to give people a glimpse of what a world without cars would feel like. Maybe it'd be better to send them to Venice, since this year's autoholiday caused
traffic jams. Ever hopeful and utopian from afar, folks in Berkeley look at the European event as wonderful. The
"How Berkeley Can You Be?" festival cheers on the car-less movement. Says one organizer, "this isn't just a left-field idea. This is the new face of progress and where we're going." Not unsympathetic to the cause--I read today that 18.6 million hours+ are lost each year on the Santa Monica freeway--US engineers have come up with their own, perhaps equally
left-field new-face solution:
skycars.
