Search Within Yourself
In case you haven't seen it yet: more goodness from Google.
Google Desktop Search DownloadWin XP/2000 only for now, indexes all your Outlook, Outlook Express, AOL IM, IE, doc, xls, ppt and txt for quick searching by content. I was ruminating about personal file searching the other day as I watched my apartment continue to refuse to clean itself up. I wondered, would personal search engines change the way people take care of their own physical/tangible things? Peering into my 36"x36" moving boxes still brimming with odds-and-ends-and-rather-important-stuff, I considered typing a list of the things I own, filing them into directories named after corresponding boxes, then just relying on a search engine to figure out which box held what knick-knack. As I stared at my still unchanging apartment, I further contemplated the habits one might pick up from relying on search engines. I already keep my personal documents in a single folder, unorganized because I know I can search by date, name or content. Could it be that I'm letting this habit affect the organization of my new apartment? There is an unfortunate resemblance between my living room and the "My Documents" folder on my computer. I guess I'm going to wait for Google to do something about my apartment. They seem to release a new technology every other day anyway.
