If you were building a new high-profile public building and tourist destination for Hiroshima, would you pick an
incinerator? This is the second major public commission from mayor Takashi Hiraoka, the first one being--yep--a fire station built in 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bombings. All cultural relativism aside, does this strike anyone as being tasteless? Wouldn't you propose something like a public garden, or a museum? This would be cool if it were an ironic statement, but given the fact that it is expected also to alleviate the city's "garbage explosion," I think that any and all irony may be added in ex-post-facto by wags from overseas...
