"Radio is a sound salvation/radio is cleaning up the nation..."
Shock jocks going too far, as usual:
Asian-Americans protest radio hosts' remarks'Jersey Guys' upset Asian AmericansAsian Media Watch Demands Termination of JC 101.5 Radio Hostspartial transcript (pdf)Snippets from a press release from the Korean American Coalition, DC:
Carton began his broadcast by attacking Choi and said, "I'm using Jun Choi as an example of a larger problem… And here's the bottom line... no specific minority group or foreign group should ever ever dictate the outcome of an American election. I don't care if the Chinese population in Edison has quadrupled in the last year, Chinese should never dictate the outcome of an election, Americans should."
...
Carton's attacks on the Asian American community expanded to include the general minority population and strayed from any real political discussion. He made incomprehensible noises mocking the Chinese language and even suggested the use of segregation in "Asian-only rooms in casinos."
Carton and Rossi not only displayed their ignorance and racial intolerance through their broadcast but also encouraged talk show callers in their racism by supporting their exclamations that had no basis for their hatred. In response to a caller's unhappiness with the increasing racial diversity in Edison, Carton stated, "Damn Orientals and Indians." When he asked the caller why this was a problem, her blatantly racist and ignorant response was, "I can’t handle them! There's no American people anymore."
So far, not really much of an
apology from the station, which has been waffling between "We're sorry we offended anyone, we didn't mean it" and "It's like a sitcom, it's tongue-in-cheek stereotyping."
I wish it were unbelievable.
